The lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium will be shining on one of the biggest matches of the 2026 US Open as Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton battle for a place in the semifinals.

Alcaraz enters the quarterfinal as the defending US Open champion and has quickly erased questions surrounding his form after spending more than four months away from competition with a right wrist injury. The Spaniard defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round, extending his Grand Slam winning streak to 18 matches.

Now, another American stands in his way.

Shelton booked his place in the final eight with an impressive straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The American won 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 without facing a single break point, winning 83% of his first-serve points.

And that serve could be his biggest weapon against Alcaraz.

Shelton has already produced a 148 mph serve at this year’s US Open—the fastest recorded serve of the tournament through four rounds. Combined with the energy of a home crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 23-year-old has the tools to make this an uncomfortable night for the defending champion.

History, however, favors Alcaraz.

The Spaniard owns a 3-0 career record against Shelton, including a four-set victory at Roland Garros in 2025. Alcaraz has also won his first 13 Grand Slam matches against American opponents.

Shelton now has an opportunity to change that story on tennis’ biggest stage.

For Alcaraz, victory keeps his US Open title defense alive and moves him within two wins of another Grand Slam trophy. For Shelton, defeating one of the sport’s biggest stars in New York would rank among the defining victories of his young career.
