The Tampa Bay Rays winning streak has reached nine games, and what once looked like another strong season in Tampa Bay is quickly turning into something much bigger.
The Rays enter Friday at 74-46, sitting atop the American League East and owning the best record in baseball. They have opened a 6.5-game division lead and now return home for a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.
At this point, Tampa Bay isn’t simply hot. The Rays are making a serious case as baseball’s team to beat.
Nine Straight and Counting
Tampa Bay’s latest statement came during a sweep of the Athletics. The Rays scored 30 runs across the three-game series, finishing it with an 8-4 victory that extended their winning streak to nine.
Liam Hicks delivered the biggest blow in the finale, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and launching a three-run home run.
The Rays have also been dominant at Tropicana Field, carrying a 41-18 home record into Friday’s matchup with Baltimore.
Built for October?
The biggest question is whether Tampa Bay can turn regular-season dominance into a deep postseason run.
One major reason for optimism is the back end of the bullpen. Bryan Baker has emerged as one of baseball’s most effective closers, recording 34 saves with a 1.55 ERA and 0.84 WHIP while earning an All-Star selection.
There are still concerns. Tampa Bay’s bullpen has shown some vulnerability recently, and October baseball has a way of exposing even small weaknesses. But the Rays have consistently found ways to maximize their roster and win games without depending on one superstar carrying the entire club.
The AL East Runs Through Tampa Bay
Baltimore now arrives for an important four-game series with the Rays holding firm control of the division. The Orioles are fighting to remain in the Wild Card race, while Tampa Bay has an opportunity to strengthen its grip on the American League.
Nine consecutive wins have changed the conversation.
The question is no longer whether the Rays are legitimate contenders.
It’s whether anyone in baseball wants to face them in October.
