The Chicago Bears couldn’t have asked for a much louder start to the 2026 NFL season.
Chicago exploded for 59 points in a 59–37 victory over the Carolina Panthers, producing its highest-scoring game since 1980 and immediately putting the rest of the NFC on notice.
At the center of it all was Caleb Williams.
The Bears quarterback completed 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 65 yards and two scores on the ground. He finished the afternoon with four total touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It was also a performance that made Bears history. Williams became the first player in franchise history to record at least 200 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the same game.
But this wasn’t a one-man show.
Chicago finished with a massive 552 yards of total offense, including 291 rushing yards. D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai both surpassed 100 yards on the ground as the Panthers simply couldn’t slow down Ben Johnson’s offense.
The Bears scored 31 points in the first half and then added another 28 after halftime.
For a franchise that spent years searching for consistency on offense, putting up 59 points in Week 1 feels significant.
There are still questions. Chicago’s defense surrendered 37 points and Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Better opponents will punish those defensive mistakes.
But offensively?
The Bears just showed how dangerous they can be.
Chicago won the NFC North and a playoff game last season. If Williams and this offense have another level in 2026, the conversation may no longer be about whether the Bears can make the playoffs.
It may be about how far they can go.
