Casemiro Joins Inter Miami as MLS Opens Investigation

Inter Miami has landed another global superstar, but Casemiro’s arrival is already surrounded by controversy.

The Brazilian midfielder officially signed with the reigning MLS champions after leaving Manchester United as a free agent. On paper, it’s another major statement from a club that already features Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul. Off the field, however, Major League Soccer has immediately opened an investigation into how the deal came together.

The issue is not Casemiro himself. The investigation centers around MLS’ unique Discovery Rights system.

Unlike most leagues around the world, MLS allows clubs to place players on confidential discovery lists. If a player from outside the league decides to join MLS, the club holding those discovery rights gets the first opportunity to negotiate. If another team wants that player, it must first acquire those rights through a trade or financial agreement.

In Casemiro’s case, those rights belonged to the LA Galaxy.

Inter Miami eventually reached an agreement with the Galaxy for those rights, but MLS is investigating whether Miami began negotiations with Casemiro before completing that process. If that happened, it could be considered tampering under league rules. MLS has confirmed the review is ongoing and will release the details of the agreement only after the investigation is complete.

From a football perspective, the move makes perfect sense.

Even at 34, Casemiro remains one of the game’s elite defensive midfielders. His experience, positioning and ability to control matches provide exactly the type of balance Inter Miami has been searching for. With Messi creating chances further forward and Rodrigo De Paul covering ground in midfield, Casemiro gives Miami a proven ball winner capable of protecting the back line while allowing the club’s attacking stars to play with more freedom.

The investigation does not automatically put the transfer at risk. Most observers expect the signing to stand, with the league instead determining whether Inter Miami violated MLS procedures. Possible outcomes could include financial penalties or additional compensation tied to the Galaxy’s discovery rights if tampering is confirmed.

For now, Casemiro is officially an Inter Miami player. The only question left is whether the club followed every rule required to bring another world-class name to South Florida.
