The Battle of Ontario is back.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators renew one of Canada’s most recognizable hockey rivalries tonight, with a unique twist: they’ll be playing two games at the same time.
Toronto and Ottawa have split their training-camp rosters, with one group meeting at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto and another facing off at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Both games begin at 7:00 PM ET.
Yes, it’s preseason. But for plenty of players on the ice, these games matter.
Training camp is entering an important stage as coaches evaluate prospects, new additions and players competing for spots before opening-night rosters are finalized. Ottawa, for example, has several roster hopefuls trying to make their case, including Stephen Halliday and Carter Yakemchuk.
Toronto is also entering a new chapter.
After missing the playoffs last season, the Maple Leafs made significant changes during the offseason, including changes behind the bench and the addition of 2026 No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna.
And then there’s the rivalry itself.
Toronto and Ottawa have spent decades battling for Ontario bragging rights. While preseason hockey doesn’t carry the stakes of a regular-season meeting, there’s still something different about seeing these two jerseys across from each other.
For the game at Scotiabank Arena, the betting market has Toronto as the clear favorite. The Maple Leafs are currently around -245 on the moneyline, with the Senators at +198, while the total is set at 5.5 goals. The numbers reflect the stronger NHL presence expected in Toronto’s lineup, but preseason hockey can be difficult to predict with split squads and players fighting for roster spots.
That only adds another layer to tonight’s matchup. For established players, it’s a chance to get ready for opening night. For prospects and players on the bubble, it could be one of their final opportunities to show they belong.
And for the fans?
It’s Toronto versus Ottawa again.
