    Champions League League Phase Set After Dramatic Final Qualifying Night

    The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League field is officially complete after the final qualifying matches delivered four more teams into the league phase on Wednesday.

    AEK Athens, Viking, Slovan Bratislava and Fenerbahçe all booked their places on the final night of qualifying, completing the 36-team field ahead of Thursday’s Champions League draw.

    Fenerbahçe Deliver in Lyon

    One of the biggest results came in France, where Fenerbahçe defeated Lyon 2–1 to advance 3–2 on aggregate.

    The first leg had finished 1–1, leaving everything on the line in Lyon. Fenerbahçe ultimately delivered the result they needed away from home and secured their place among Europe’s elite.

    AEK Athens Cruise Through

    AEK Athens entered their second leg against Levski Sofia with the tie scoreless after a 0–0 opening match.

    There was nothing close about the return.

    AEK won 4–0 to take the tie by the same aggregate score and comfortably secure Champions League football.

    Viking and Slovan Bratislava Complete the Field

    Viking also produced a big performance, defeating GNK Dinamo 3–1 after the clubs had drawn 2–2 in the opening leg. The Norwegian side advanced 5–3 on aggregate.

    Slovan Bratislava had a much tougher road. After a 1–1 first leg against Celje, Bratislava needed extra time before earning a 2–1 victory and advancing 3–2 on aggregate.

    Those four clubs join LASK, Sabah and Bodø/Glimt as the seven teams to survive Champions League qualifying. The other 29 clubs qualified directly for the league phase.

    Now comes the part everyone has been waiting for.

    The Champions League league-phase draw takes place Thursday, August 27 at 18:00 CET, when all 36 clubs will discover their opponents and the road to European football’s biggest prize will officially take shape.

    Their biggest advantage is depth. PSG can control possession, press aggressively and attack from several areas of the pitch. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could be particularly important in the final third, where his ability to create space and attack defenders gives Villa another problem to solve.

    Aston Villa Have Nothing to Fear

    Villa may be the underdog, but dismissing an Unai Emery team in a European final would be a mistake.

    Winning the Europa League earned Villa their place in Salzburg and put the club back among Europe’s trophy winners. Emery’s experience in European competition also gives Villa a manager comfortable preparing for one-off matches against elite opposition.

    The challenge is availability. Match-day reports indicate Emiliano Martínez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins are unavailable, removing three major pieces from Villa’s usual spine.

    That makes discipline even more important. Villa cannot afford to let PSG turn the match into an open-field shootout.

    PSG vs Aston Villa Prediction

    PSG have the stronger squad and enter as the betting favorite, but Villa have enough quality and tactical structure to make this uncomfortable.

    The longer Villa keep the score close, the more pressure shifts toward PSG. But over 90 minutes, Paris should have too many ways to create chances.

    The names have become even bigger in recent years. Son arrived from Tottenham in 2025 in a league-record transfer, while Müller brought a career featuring 35 trophies to Vancouver. In 2026, Lewandowski and Griezmann added two more European heavyweights to the league.

    But no signing has accelerated MLS’s international profile quite like Lionel Messi.

    The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Inter Miami in 2023 and has since become a back-to-back MLS MVP while helping Miami win Leagues Cup, the Supporters’ Shield and the 2025 MLS Cup.

    Now another recognizable name is reportedly heading north of the border, with Alexis Sánchez linked with a move to CF Montréal after a decorated European career featuring Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Marseille.

    The evolution is difficult to ignore. MLS now features 30 clubs across the United States and Canada, with players such as Messi, Son and Müller representing the league on a global stage.

    Beckham opened the door. Messi took the league’s exposure to another level. And with another generation of international stars arriving in North America, MLS is no longer simply trying to get the soccer world’s attention.

    It already has it.

    The matchup to watch is Declan Rice against Julián Álvarez. They may not be standing shoulder to shoulder all night, but their fingerprints will be all over this game. Rice is Arsenal’s stabilizer. He breaks play, protects the back line, drives forward when space opens and gives Mikel Arteta’s side a serious set-piece threat. In matches this tight, that matters.

    Álvarez is different. He is movement, pressing, instinct and danger. Atlético do not need to dominate possession for him to hurt you. One loose pass, one counterattack, one half-second of hesitation and he can punish it. His ability to play between the lines and then burst into scoring areas makes him Atlético’s most dangerous weapon.

    So who has the edge? Slightly, Arsenal. Their defensive control and midfield balance give them a better platform over two legs. But this first leg in Madrid feels much tighter than the overall matchup. Atlético will slow the tempo, foul when needed, defend narrow and look to turn Arsenal’s patience into frustration.

    The odds reflect that balance. Arsenal sit as slight favourites, generally around the +140 to +170 range. Atlético are priced closer to +210 to +225, while the draw is hovering around +180 to +225 depending on the book. That tells the story clearly. Arsenal are respected, but nobody is treating Atlético like a soft underdog.

    For Arsenal, the sleeper is Gabriel Martinelli. Saka will attract attention, Rice will control headlines, but Martinelli’s pace against Atlético’s back line could be decisive. For Atlético, keep an eye on Alexander Sørloth. If Álvarez drifts and creates space, Sørloth’s physical presence can become a real problem inside the box.

    Prediction? Arsenal are more likely to advance over the tie, but the first leg feels like a grind.
