    NFL Is Back: Patriots and Seahawks Open 2026 With Super Bowl Rematch

    The wait is over.

    The 2026 NFL regular season officially kicks off Wednesday night with a blockbuster matchup as the New England Patriots travel to Seattle to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks at Lumen Field.

    And there’s already unfinished business.

    Just seven months ago, Seattle defeated New England in Super Bowl LX to capture the second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Now, the Patriots get an immediate opportunity for revenge on the same night Seattle begins its title defense.

    The matchup marks the first season-opening Super Bowl rematch since 2016, adding even more significance to an already massive opening night.

    Seattle enters the season with much of its championship core intact, including quarterback Sam Darnold and star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. But there have been changes, including the departure of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III during the offseason.

    New England has made major moves of its own.

    The Patriots added star wide receiver A.J. Brown, giving quarterback Drake Maye a legitimate No. 1 target as New England looks to take another step after reaching the Super Bowl last season.

    The Patriots will, however, open the year without running back TreVeyon Henderson, who has been ruled out with an ankle injury.

    Patriots vs. Seahawks Betting Odds

    The sportsbooks are giving the defending champions the edge heading into opening night.

    The line has already seen some movement. Seattle originally opened as a 4.5-point favorite before the spread tightened to around 3.5 points heading into game day.

    That still leaves the Seahawks as the favorite at home, but the market suggests bettors are expecting a much closer battle than Seattle’s 29-13 victory over New England in Super Bowl LX.

    For Seattle, opening night represents the beginning of something even more difficult than winning a championship: defending it.

    For New England, it’s an opportunity to immediately answer the loss that ended last season.

    Patriots. Seahawks. Super Bowl rematch.

    The 2026 NFL season couldn’t have asked for a much bigger opening night.

    In an Instagram post on August 16, Brady pushed back against players looking for what he called “easy ways out.” His message was simple: when football season arrives, football players should play. Brady supported his point by sharing footage from a 2010 preseason game in which he connected with Randy Moss for a 65-yard touchdown.

    It has reopened one of the NFL’s biggest August debates.

    Brady Believes Live Reps Matter

    Brady’s argument comes from experience. During his career, preseason wasn’t simply about earning a roster spot. It was an opportunity to sharpen timing, build chemistry and prepare for regular-season intensity.

    In 2014, Brady described a preseason matchup as a chance to “gauge where we’re at” against a quality opponent. Even after he became one of football’s biggest stars, live preseason snaps remained part of his preparation at different stages of his career.

    The modern NFL has increasingly moved in another direction.

    With most teams playing only three preseason games, coaches have limited opportunities to evaluate their rosters while also protecting established starters. The 2026 preseason continues that three-game format for 30 teams, with Carolina and Arizona receiving an additional game because of their Hall of Fame Game appearance.

    Why NFL Stars Don’t Want the Risk

    The counterargument is obvious: why risk a season-changing injury in a game that doesn’t count?

    Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones recently made that position clear, questioning the value of preseason action compared with the injury risk.

    History supports that concern. Stars including Jordy Nelson and Odell Beckham Jr. have suffered significant injuries during preseason action. For coaches managing multimillion-dollar players and Super Bowl expectations, protecting starters can be more important than getting a handful of extra snaps.

    Brady’s comments ultimately expose a philosophical divide.

    For veterans with years of NFL experience, preseason may offer little that training camp cannot provide. But for rookies, backups and players fighting for roster spots, these games remain critical. Brady himself made his Patriots debut during the 2000 Hall of Fame Game before eventually becoming the most decorated quarterback in NFL history.

    Brady believes preparation helped build his career. Today’s NFL increasingly believes preservation is part of preparation.

    The question is whether teams have pushed that philosophy too far.

    Their biggest advantage is depth. PSG can control possession, press aggressively and attack from several areas of the pitch. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could be particularly important in the final third, where his ability to create space and attack defenders gives Villa another problem to solve.

    Aston Villa Have Nothing to Fear

    Villa may be the underdog, but dismissing an Unai Emery team in a European final would be a mistake.

    Winning the Europa League earned Villa their place in Salzburg and put the club back among Europe’s trophy winners. Emery’s experience in European competition also gives Villa a manager comfortable preparing for one-off matches against elite opposition.

    The challenge is availability. Match-day reports indicate Emiliano Martínez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins are unavailable, removing three major pieces from Villa’s usual spine.

    That makes discipline even more important. Villa cannot afford to let PSG turn the match into an open-field shootout.

    PSG vs Aston Villa Prediction

    PSG have the stronger squad and enter as the betting favorite, but Villa have enough quality and tactical structure to make this uncomfortable.

    The longer Villa keep the score close, the more pressure shifts toward PSG. But over 90 minutes, Paris should have too many ways to create chances.
